Gerald Harrex has been with TracMap for eight years and was the company’s second employee, after founder Colin Brown. Gerald saw a demonstration of the TracMap prototype and immediately realised the technology’s potential. He approached Colin and joined the company as a shareholder, director and employee.
These days, Gerald focuses on Australasian aviation sales and support, as well as being available to assist across the company generally. With a background as an auto electrician, Gerald is a handy person for both colleagues and customers to find at the end of the phone.
We spoke to Gerald to find out what his role involves:
What is your current role at TracMap? I.e. your area of expertise?
I am aviation sales manager for New Zealand and Australia, as well as being available to assist generally across all TracMap teams, including technical installation.
How long have you been with the company, and why did you join TracMap?
I joined TracMap eight years ago, after watching Colin Brown demonstrate the prototype guidance system for agriculture fertiliser spreading and spraying. I thought it had huge potential. Hence, I invested in TracMap and became employed to help develop and take the product to market.
What experience/background did you bring to the TracMap team?
I come from a farming background, so understand the industry. I spent more than 30 years in the auto-electrical industry and owned and managed a large service and parts business. This gave me technical and business skills, which transferred across to TracMap.
What does your role entail on a daily basis?
As sales and support to the ag aviation industry, I spend a lot of my day on the phone with pilots – helping them get the best out of their technology, addressing any issues or following up on sales queries. I also still do a lot of installing of TracMap products for other parts of the company.
Why do you love your job?
TracMap has great products and I’m proud to be part of the team behind those products. The employees and customers are great people to work with.
What are some of the top projects you have worked on at the company?
A highlight for me was working with pilots to develop an aviation product that met their needs. We started from scratch and it took a couple of years – the result is a great product that is highly valued by those who use it. I’m also proud of the work we did on the TracMap External Lightbar for fixed wing aircraft, which we launched 18 months ago.
What are your interests outside of work?
I enjoy flying my light sport Rans S6 aircraft, as well as tinkering on and driving my Series 1 and 2 Land Rovers. I also enjoy fishing, golf, tennis, curling and almost any other sport.
